Zusammenfassung

The fifty poems in Scatter & Settle traverse multiple locations and subjects, from Australia and the United States to Ireland and England, from Texas to Alaska, from Victoria to Central Europe. O'Reilly's poems investigate emigration, fatherhood, marriage, (un)belonging, gun violence, contemporary politics, environmental degradation, religion, the COVID-19 pandemic, friendship, conceptions of home, and the poet's past. O'Reilly utilises a range of poetic forms, including the duplex, sestina, cento, tanka, sonnet, erasure and pastoral, along with free verse lyrics and found poems, displaying a command of his craft and eagerness to explore, play, and push his poetics into new territory. The poems pay close attention to the details of experience, whether the poet is at home or travelling, using imagery and specificity to illuminate the extraordinary within the ordinary and critique narrow-mindedness, violence, exploitation and materialism. As a body of work, the poems in Scatter & Settle celebrate family, community, nature, movement, experience and the beauty of the everyday.

Irish-Australian poet Nathanael O'Reilly is the author of sixteen collections, including Ghosts in the Landscape (Liquid Amber Press, 2027); Terminals (above/ground press, 2025); Separation Blues: Poems 1994-2024 (Flying Islands, 2024); Dublin Wandering (Recent Work Press, 2024); Landmarks (Lamar University Literary Press, 2024); Selected Poems of Ned Kelly (Downingfield Press, 2024); Boulevard (Downingfield Press, 2024); (Un)belonging (Recent Work Press, 2020); Preparations for Departure (University of Western Australia Publishing, 2017), named a Book of the Year in Australian Book Review; andDistance (Ginninderra Press, 2015). More than 390 of his poems have appeared in journals and anthologies published in fifteen countries. O'Reilly received an Emerging Writers Grant from the Literature Board of the Australia Council for the Arts in 2010 and has been a writer-in-residence at Booranga Writers' Centre in Australia and All Saints Heritage Centre in Ireland. He has given invited readings in Australia, Canada, England, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Slovakia, and the United States. He has been a finalist and winner in poetry competitions in Australia, Ireland, and the United States. O'Reilly is Associate Professor of Creative Writing at The University of Texas at Arlington.
