Zusammenfassung

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the role of anaerobic microorganisms in sustainable energy production, waste management, and environmental biotechnology. It introduces the principles of anaerobic digestion and highlights the growing importance of biogas and biomethane as renewable energy carriers in the transition toward sustainable societies. The microbial processes underpinning these technologies are presented with a focus on the biochemistry and ecophysiology of anaerobic microorganisms, including syntrophic bacteria and methanogenic archaea.

The book explores microbial interactions in diverse and extreme environments, such as oil reservoirs and low temperature anaerobic systems. In addition, the fermentation of sludge and organic waste streams to produce volatile fatty acids is discussed, highlighting their potential as valuable platform chemicals fora wide range of biotechnological applications.

Recent advances in bioelectrochemical systems are also covered, demonstrating how electroactive microorganisms can be harnessed for resource recovery from wastewater. The concept of carboxylic acid chain elongation using waste-derived substrates is presented as another promising approach for developing circular bioeconomies.

The final chapters focus on emerging trends and future directions in anaerobic biotechnology. Topics include biological biogas upgrading, the application of artificial intelligence and multi-omics approaches to decipher microbial metabolic pathways and interaction networks, as well as the development of global databases such as MIDAS AD for characterizing microbial communities in anaerobic digesters. By integrating fundamental microbiology with innovative technologies and industrial applications, the book demonstrates the pivotal role of anaerobic biotechnology in advancing sustainability, resource recovery, renewable energy production, and the transition to a circular economy.

Dr. Ana Júlia Cavaleiro is a dedicated researcher in the field of environmental biotechnology, with an extensive career at the Universidade do Minho, where has held various roles since 2012. Currently serving as an Assistant Researcher, she holds several leadership and governance roles, including Associate Director of the Centre of Biological Engineering and of the Environmental Biotechnology Laboratory, and member of the School Council of the School of Engineering at the Universidade do Minho. Her academic trajectory began with a degree in Environmental Engineering from the Universidade de Aveiro (1997), followed by a Master's in Environmental Technologies (2000), and a PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering from the Universidade do Minho (2010). Over the years, Dr. Cavaleiro has taught a range of courses related to environmental technology and bioprocesses, while supervising and mentoring undergraduate, MSc and PhD students.
Dr. Cavaleiro has been recognized for her outstanding research contributions, receiving several prestigious awards, including second place for Best Oral Presentation at the 12th International Workshop on Environment and Alternative Energy, NASA/ESA/C3P in 2014. Her research focuses on resource recovery from waste/wastewater and environmental bioremediation, with a special focus on anaerobic processes and microbial interaction in complex communities. She has been actively involved in several projects, including the bioremediation of hydrocarbon- and microplastic-contaminated environments, and the exploration of micro-aeration and conductive materials to enhance methane production in anaerobic digestion systems. With a strong background in environmental biotechnology, her work continues to contribute significantly to the development of sustainable  solutions for environmental protection, pollution control, climate neutrality and circularity.

Professor Maria Alcina Pereira is an accomplished academic and researcher at the Universidade do Minho, where she has been serving as an Assistant Professor since 2013. Her academic journey began with a degree in Biological Engineering (1995), followed by a Master's in Biological Engineering (1999), followed by a PhD program in Chemical and Biological Engineering (2003) at the same institution, where she has held several key academic roles, including Assistant Researcher from 2008 to 2013. Since 2022, Dr. Pereira is the Program Director for the Master's Program in Chemical and Biological Engineering, and have also served as a member of the Program Studies Steering Committee for the Master's Program in Biotechnology from 2019 to 2022.
Dr. Pereira's research interests lie at the intersection of environmental biotechnology and anaerobic microbiology, overseeing both the Environmental Biotechnology Laboratory and the Anaerobe Microbiology Laboratory as Executive Director, contributing to cutting-edge research in bioprocesses and waste management. Dr. Pereira has led several research projects focused on the development of sustainable biotechnological solutions for the treatment of wastewaters with recovery of valuable products, microbial monitoring of biomethane and biohydrogen production processes, optimization of anaerobic digestion and co-digestion systems, and the implementation of sustainable practices in industrial sectors, including the food and textile industries. Through these initiatives, Prof. Pereira continues to drive innovation in the fields of environmental sustainability, bioprocess engineering, and biotechnology.
