FOREWORD The African continent stands at a historic crossroads. The establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) represents one of the most ambitious economic integration projects in modern history, offering unprecedented opportunities for trade expansion, industrial development, job creation, and regional cooperation among African nations. As Africa advances toward greater economic integration, the role of women in shaping this transformation becomes increasingly significant. Women constitute a substantial proportion of Africa's population and workforce. They are entrepreneurs, traders, professionals, policymakers, regulators, academics, community leaders, and innovators whose contributions are essential to the continent's economic growth and sustainable development. Across Africa, women participate actively in both formal and informal sectors, facilitating commerce, supporting livelihoods, and fostering social cohesion. At the same time, the expansion of trade, financial systems, and digital technologies has created new opportunities as well as new vulnerabilities. Financial crime, money laundering, corruption, illicit financial flows, cybercrime, and terrorism financing continue to pose serious threats to economic stability, national security, and sustainable development.
